Oxytocin, produced by the Dutch company Kypro, is a vital hormone that stimulates the smooth muscle fibers of the uterus and mammary glands. It is primarily used to ensure a safe calving and effective udder emptying, making it an essential item in a professional breeder's kit.
Why is oxytocin used?
- Facilitating childbirth: It treats weak uterine contractions during fetal delivery in cows, horses, and sheep.
- Uterine cleansing: Very effective in cases of retained placenta (placental abruption) and cleansing the uterus after childbirth to prevent infections.
- Stimulating milk production: It helps in cases of milk cessation after childbirth, and is used as an adjunctive treatment in cases of mastitis to empty the infected milk.
- Controlling bleeding: It helps to shrink the uterus and stop bleeding after difficult childbirths.
